It would seem a hard year

to some and a cushioned interval
to others. I try not
to think of it as either.
It has been saturation
and sparseness. Somewhere between
a sopping redwood forest
and a scrubby desert
of hiding crawly things.
It has been a good year
for my body and nonsensical
for my head.
The rules have been scrubbed
and won’t fall into place.
Rearranging them in light chalk
strokes on the blackboard
doesn’t add up, doesn’t add up.
The addition of x doesn’t matter;
the division of y doesn’t matter.
Square roots are hidden.
Equations are wandering
dogs in the street;
the equal sign is a promise
that leads to nothing.
It’s been a year.
Since what? I don’t know.
It has been a year.

We are winding down
like bike gears
that lost their bearings
and grind into the frame.
